Disappointed in twicon

Talk about the con here...

Disappointed in twicon

Postby heatherdallas on Fri Jul 31, 2009 4:59 pm

Now that twicon is here it seems like all my $255 bought me was a ticket to the ball. Who else is really upset and regretting forking over the money? I just hope the twicon organizors have a blast spending the 750,000 they just made off of us...

Keep in mind, we got the welcome reception, 1 free autograph, ticket to Q & A session, the ball, and a farewell brunch. I'm having a blast, personally. Keep in mind...it costs a LOT to rent out all this space and pay for security and things like that. Plus, they have to pay the talent to get them to come here.

I just saw this convention on the news here in Dallas. You people are crazy. I have attended many Star Wars conventions and they only cost $25-$50 for three days. Heck, even Wizard World is only $55 for the whole thing (3 days also) and San Diego Comic Con runs about $150 (4 days). And that person saying about cost, the events I go to are in convention centers and have real big celebrities. Just look at Wizard World and San Diego's Past guest.

I know some people are really disappointed but I figure with the money I spent I'm determined to have a good time and I'm havin a f*ckin BLAST! It's soooo much fun. I saw Jackson and 100 Monkeys at the pub and they were AMAZING! Loved them. Can't wait for the pics and autos tomorrow and breakfast with Alex. XD I can't believe it's already gonna be saturday though. =(

surprised? i can guess that next year's conventions will be run by other people in various cities closer to our homes, much like the late bloomers this year. i guess we can all learn a lesson and not sign up for something so early. the old saying goes 'if it sounds too good to be true...' heck, my friend was even told that the things she signed up for and had on her online registration were nowhere to be found when she checked in. go figure. i think the term 'disorganized' may very well be an understatement, but i'm sure you'll hear this convention was a success. it seems the first order of business for TwiCon 2010 will be to find a new management and promotion company. ;)

Um, personally I've had a blast, the whole thing really a great experience for me. Its opened up more opportunitues for me to travel in the future and I would certainly attend next twicon if I can make it.

I know people are upset but I keep in mind this was their first time orginzing the convention. A few people had to handle about 2,500 people, honestly I can't blame them and give them props for
doing such a huge event for us.

Plus, waayyy back Bailey stated they weren't making a profit off of all the money we paid...All that money was going towards the convention and everything, all for us.

It just saddens me how many people have such negative responses to how twicon has gone and can't just think about all the awesome parts. Take the bad and turn it into good, the orginizers tried their very best to handle all of us crazy fans and do what they could.

I've also had a blast and am really sad that it's ending today. For the number of people in attendance, I think they did the best they could. I do have some recommendations for next year that I will email them when I get home. I think their main problem was there were too many people in charge (every person gave you a different answer) and there was just a real breakdown in communication among the staff. I think they will be better prepared next time. I'm willing to give them a pass since it's the first one.

I am definitely planning on coming to the next one. I've had so much fun and met so many nice people....the group I've been spending the weekend with decided we should all stay together next year (I came solo). And I know that the price is high, but a lot of work goes into an event like this and I can't even imagine how much it costs to get all that talent here. Does any other convention have that many actors in attendance?

This being the first one doesn't give them a pass. They've had nearly a year to plan. They hired a supposed professional company to manage the event. From what we're seeing, with regards to things like getting ten answers from ten different people on 'staff' for the same exact question or taking hours to get through the lines or things not starting on time or many other things that apparently didn't go as planned, it really calls into question the amount of planning and organization that went on (or perhaps the selection of the people who helped out). Saying that there were too few staff members to handle such a large crowd of Twilighters is ridiculous. They've known for a while now exactly how many people would be in attendance. They should have known exactly how many people they needed to put on staff to manage the entire flock. I applaud those who could simply 'make the best of it', but I think there are a lot more of us who live in the real world who felt that this event slightly missed the mark and that the online events certainly forecasted the overall convention to a tee.

Perhaps there will be a 'next' TwiCon, but I believe we've decided to attend something closer to home next year (or later this year) with Twi/Tour.

Just have to comment on a few things here

As someone else just said: That is not a valid excuse as they hired a supposed professional company. Any event management company worth their salt should have told them what to expect and how many staff they would need. To claim being understaffed is not an excuse and is in fact another fault on their part. They should have hired more people and given them better training. All the organisers had to do was attend another convention of similar size to see what would be needed and what to expect. There are so many of these on throughout the U.S. all year round that this is not expecting too much. If you havent done something before: Research it!

Plus, waayyy back Bailey stated they weren't making a profit off of all the money we paid...All that money was going towards the convention and everything, all for us.

I can do maths, and i have had experience in the industry and know how much things cost... this is bullocks. The only way they could come out of this without making money is if they are morons and paid WAYYYY to much for things.

its great that some people managed to make the best out of a bad situation, its what you have to do in a situation like that. But people shouldnt have had to try so hard to have a good time around all the bad crap. Stuff always goes wrong at events, its the nature of the business, a good event management team makes sure that these things have minimal impact on the atendees.

Lots of conventions for lots of different fandoms have just as many guests and for events that go for multiple days the guests are usually there for all of them.. i actually think its pretty lame that they only had the majority of guests for the one day... that's what lead to all those horribly long lines. If you space that out over a couple of days its a much more relaxed atmosphere for everyone and it means people actually get to exchange a few words with the actor instead of being hearded along like cattle.

i could bring up another fifty things i thought sucked about this but i wont. i just had to comment on those couple of things that were bugging me, cos i hate to see people being brainwashed by the organisers into thinking things like this are just part of the norm and couldn't be avoided.. they're not and they could of been
